AV Consultants is reducing waste by using only recycled content “re-sleeves” for their CDs and DVDs. They also feature examples of their work online rather than mailing-out informational packets. AV Consultants uses web-based correspondence and production, editing and distribution of all the videos produced. Videos during the posted on YouTube to promote video sharing, while also reducing any waste that a hard copy CD would produce.

Aussie Pet Mobile Sonoma County

Aussie Pet Mobile Sonoma County is an environmentally innovative business that provides mobile grooming services for all breeds of cats and dogs. Base services include a 15 step grooming process, breed clips and shave downs. By coming to the customer, Aussie Pet Mobile reduces the number of vehicle trips pet owners take to drop off and pick up pets from stationary grooming sites. Their one-on-one service is provided in a self-contained vehicle that utilizes a rooftop mounted solar panel for generating salon power needs.

Through their hard work and perseverance, Blue Oak Energy has made enormous contributions to the growth of the solar industry in California. In 2008 Blue Oak contributed in the contruction of 7% of the entire US solar market and 23% of the entire California solar market which translates into the reduction 500 million metric tons of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

Blue Star Refreshments is an office refreshment service provider located in Silicon Valley that has made the commitment to go green. They offer complete office refreshment services including coffee, snack, dairy products, fresh fruit, baked goods, and catering services, with an emphasis on a low carbon footprint, energy savings, less waste, and healthier snacking through their Healthy Snack Program.

Bowman Design Group

In just two years, Bowman Design Group not only met but shattered California’s AB32 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions goals for 2020 – and business remains strong. In results verified by the California Climate Action Registry, Bowman slashed its GHG emissions by 65%. This result far exceeds the state of California’s goal, which mandates statewide GHG emission reductions of 15% by 2020 and 95% by 2050 versus 2008 levels. Bowman’s president, Tom Bowman, set out to see whether a small business could meet the California emission goals and remain financially viable.

Brentwood Royal Cleaners

Brentwood Royal Cleaners first opened its doors in 1948 and since 2003 has offered environmentally-friendly dry cleaning. Traditional dry cleaners use a chemical called Perchloroethylene, which is a known carcinogen and ground contaminant. Brentwood Royal Cleaners uses a CO2 cleaning process that does not harm the environment. Brentwood Royal Cleaners has approval from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the California Air-Resource Board (CARB) as well as South Coast Air Quality District Management (SCAQMD) to use liquid CO2 to dry clean clothes.

Built in the 1950s, but newly remodeled, the owners of Capitol Bowl have taken steps to attract more customers and lower their carbon footprint. Capitol Bowl’s activities include open bowling, organized leagues, birthday parties, and company celebrations. The restaurant in the facility prepares everything from scratch and is open for lunch and dinner. In the past three years, the owners have transformed an old, inefficient building into an energy-smart, water-conserving, beautiful bowling center and restaurant.

Capitola Veterinary Hospital is a full-service veterinary medical facility that has become an eco-friendly center for all pets and clients. They have taken a number of significant actions to reduce their carbon footprint over the years. For example, they have eliminated paper use by converting to paperless medical records, invested in a paperless fax machine, and retrofitted all of their old fluorescent tubes with high efficiency LED tubes and T8 tubes.

The hotel purchases environmentally friendly products, such as re-fillable amenity bottles and recycled-content paper. Casa Madrona takes resource conservation seriously by using water efficient fixtures, installing energy efficient appliances, and promoting public transportation to conserve fossil fuels.

CenterStone Communities

Harmony is CenterStone Communities’ first solar community in the San Bernardino County. CenterStone Communities is committed to designing homes that are increasingly healthy for homeowners, more efficient, and gentler on the environment. Harmony solar homes typically out perform California’s Title 24 Energy Codes by 17% to 42%. Each home operates with a reduction of power plant pollutants and dependence on non-renewable energy resources.

Chavez Trucking

Demonstrating their commitment to sustainability, Chavez Trucking, replaced old, heavy diesel trucks with new ones to reduce their carbon footprint and increase fuel efficiency.

Through the Sacramento Emergency Clean Air Transportation Program, a program that provided incentives for owners of heavy-duty vehicles to replace them with more efficient ones, Chavez Trucking replaced 16 old trucks with new ones, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and fuel use. These actions increase fuel efficiency by 1.5 miles per gallon, saving them over $80,000 per year!
